Once hunted almost to extinction, these gentle giants loll in the waters within stone’s throw of the rocky shore, where one can sit and commune with them for hours. Originally called Hermanuspietersfontein after Hermanus Pieters, a teacher and shepherd who used to graze his sheep in the area, the town’s name was shortened in 1902 at the anguished request of the local postmaster.

  6. Day 6 George

This morning drive up the renowned Garden Route to the charming town of George and check in at the Fancourt Hotel.

Tucked between the breath-taking Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, George is the hub of the world-renowned Garden Route, an area of spectacular forests, lakes, rivers and mountains.

The sixth oldest town in South Africa, George is filled with reminders of its gracious past, such as the graceful Drostdy building and the King Edward VII Library. The Slave Tree, an ancient oak planted more than 180 years ago, earned its name from the chain and lock embedded in its trunk. George is also a mecca for golfers, with a number of golf courses that consistently appear on the list of the country’s top ten.

Although George itself is not on the coastline, the secluded beaches at nearby Victoria Bay are ideal for surfing, while the holiday resort of Herold’s Bay offers large tidal pools and good angling opportunities.

Spend two nights in a suite at The Fancourt Hotel. Your stay includes breakfast, as well as an 18-hole round of golf on the Outeniqua Golf Course.

  7. Day 7 George

Spend the day enjoying the majestic parkland layout of the Outeniqua Golf Course. One of the finest 18-hole parkland layouts in the country, this is just one of three challenging courses at the Fancourt Country Club. Designed by legendary golfer Gary Player, its challenging layout and fine condition make it an excellent test of golfing skill. With a variety of tees from which to choose from, the course can provide an
outstanding experience for players of all levels.

Sculpted and finished with rare attention to detail, the course has also been designed with the prevailing coastal winds in mind. The spectacular Outeniqua Mountains in the background, as well as a multitude of flowers and water features scattered throughout the course, ensure the beauty of the setting. Should you feel the need to brush up on your golfing skills, the warm-up area features a full-length range, as well as a chipping and bunker practice area.

  8. Day 8 Knysna

After breakfast depart for Pezula Resort Hotel and Spa in Knysna.

Knysna is famous for many things, from its forests, where elephants still roam, to its tranquil lagoons, which are filled with oysters. This beautiful town is surrounded by rolling hills and its huge lagoon, which is guarded jealously at the entrance to the sea by two massive cliff faces known as ‘The Heads’.

Here, at the heart of South Africa’s renowned Garden Route, visitors are spoilt for choice with the perfect mix of fun-filled and tranquil adventures. Browse through quaint handicrafts stores or soak up the sun on Bollard Beach, taunt your taste
buds at an award-winning restaurant, hike through an enchanting forest or stand face-to-face with graceful giants at the Knysna Elephant Park – the choices are seemingly endless.  As the day comes to an end, enjoy the town’s vibrant, cosmopolitan nightlife.
